About Dhanteras
Dhanteras, also called Dhantrayodashi, opens the five days of Diwali on the thirteenth tithi (Trayodashi) of the dark fortnight. It is associated with wealth and health: people worship Lakshmi and Kubera, and remember Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods, whose birth is also commemorated on this day.
It is traditionally considered an auspicious day to buy gold, silver or new utensils, and to light a lamp at the door in the evening.
How the date is decided
Dhanteras falls on the Krishna Trayodashi that is running during Pradosh Kaal, the period after sunset. If Trayodashi covers the evening on two days, this calendar takes the day on which it is also present at sunrise.
How it is observed
- Clean the house and light a lamp at the entrance in the evening.
- Worship Lakshmi, Kubera and Dhanvantari during Pradosh Kaal.
- Buy gold, silver or a new utensil, as the tradition holds.
Puja vidhi: how to do the puja
- In the evening, clean the house and light diyas at the door and in the courtyard.
- Light a four-wicked lamp for Yama facing south outside the main door (Yama Deepdaan), for the protection of the family.
- Worship Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods, with flowers, incense and a lamp, and pray for good health.
- Worship Kubera and Lakshmi, placing the new utensils, gold, silver or coins bought today before them.
- Offer sweets and naivedya, and finish with the aarti.

Katha: The story of King Hima's son
It was foretold that the son of King Hima would die of a snakebite on the fourth night of his marriage. That night his young wife heaped her gold and silver ornaments at the door of the room, lit lamps all around, and kept him awake telling stories and singing.
When Yama came in the form of a serpent, the blaze of lamps and gold dazzled him. He sat on the heap listening to the songs until dawn, and then went away. Lamps for Yama are lit on Dhanteras in memory of that night.
Aarti: Om Jai Lakshmi Mata
Read it in Roman letters
The Lakshmi aarti sung on Diwali night and at every Lakshmi puja. Words vary slightly between families.

Frequently asked questions
When is Dhanteras in 2026?
Dhanteras 2026 falls on Friday, 6 November 2026 (New Delhi). The tithi runs from 10:31 AM to 10:48 AM, 7 Nov.
When is Dhanteras in 2027?
Dhanteras 2027 falls on Wednesday, 27 October 2027 (New Delhi).
Why does the date of Dhanteras change every year?
Dhanteras follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar. It is tied to Krishna paksha Trayodashi of the month of Kartik (Purnimanta) · Ashwin (Amanta), not to a fixed Gregorian date. A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year, so the date moves earlier by roughly that much each year, until a leap month (Adhik Maas) is added and it jumps back.
Is Dhanteras on the same day everywhere?
For the cities checked (New Delhi, London, New York, Toronto, Sydney, Dubai, Singapore, Johannesburg) the date is the same. Dates can still differ in other places, because tithis are read at local sunrise or sunset.
