Dates, tithi and puja timing for the major Hindu festivals, with each date worked out from the position of the Sun and Moon rather than copied from a table. Pages are available in English and Hindi, and city pages show how dates change for Hindus living outside India.
How festival dates are worked out
A festival date depends on the tithi, the lunar day, that is running at a particular time of a particular day, not on a fixed date in the Gregorian calendar. Diwali is kept when Amavasya is running in the evening, Janmashtami at midnight and Ram Navami at midday. Tithis begin and end at any hour, and sunrise and the Moon’s position differ from place to place, so the same festival can fall on different days in different cities. The city pages show this for Hindus living abroad.
