About Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. It falls on the fourth tithi (Chaturthi) of the bright fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada. Clay idols of Ganesha are brought home or installed in public pandals and worshipped for one to ten days, ending with immersion (Visarjan).
The festival is especially large in Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Telangana, and has a long tradition of public celebration.
How the date is decided
Ganesh Chaturthi is kept on the Shukla Chaturthi that is running at midday (Madhyahna), the time at which Ganesha is believed to have been born. If Chaturthi covers midday on two days, the day on which it is also present at sunrise is chosen. The moon should not be looked at on this day, according to tradition.
How it is observed
- Install the idol at an auspicious time on the day and perform the pran pratishtha and puja.
- Offer modak, durva grass and red flowers, which are traditionally dear to Ganesha.
- Immerse the idol on the chosen day, most often the fifth, seventh or tenth day (Anant Chaturdashi).
Puja vidhi: how to do the puja
- Bring home a Ganesha idol, preferably of natural clay, and place it on a chowki covered with red cloth during the madhyahna (midday) muhurat shown above.
- Invoke him (pran pratishtha) with Ganga jal and the mantra "Om Gan Ganapataye Namah".
- Offer 21 blades of durva grass, red flowers such as hibiscus, modak or laddoo, and a coconut.
- Sing the aarti every morning and evening for as long as he stays.
- Do not look at the Moon on the night of Chaturthi; tradition says it brings false accusation (Mithya Dosha).
- Immerse the idol (visarjan) on the 1½th, 3rd, 5th, 7th or 10th day; a bucket of water at home keeps rivers clean.

Katha: How Ganesha got his head
Parvati shaped a boy from turmeric paste, gave him life and set him to guard her door while she bathed. When Shiva came home, the boy, not knowing him, would not let him in, and in the fight that followed Shiva cut off his head.
Seeing Parvati's grief, Shiva sent his attendants to bring the head of the first creature they found, an elephant, and gave the boy new life as Ganesha, leader of his ganas, to be worshipped before every other god. When the Moon laughed at his round belly, Ganesha cursed it, which is why the Moon is not looked at on this night.
Aarti: Jai Ganesh Deva
Read it in Roman letters
The traditional Ganesha aarti, sung before any other aarti in a puja. Words vary slightly between families.

Frequently asked questions
When is Ganesh Chaturthi in 2027?
Ganesh Chaturthi 2027 falls on Saturday, 4 September 2027 (New Delhi). The tithi runs from 2:19 PM, 3 Sep to 12:26 PM.
Why does the date of Ganesh Chaturthi change every year?
Ganesh Chaturthi follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar. It is tied to Shukla paksha Chaturthi of the month of Bhadrapada, not to a fixed Gregorian date. A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year, so the date moves earlier by roughly that much each year, until a leap month (Adhik Maas) is added and it jumps back.
Is Ganesh Chaturthi on the same day everywhere?
Not always. In London, New York, Toronto, Dubai, Johannesburg the date differs from New Delhi, because tithis are read at local sunrise or sunset and these places are many hours away from India. Use the city table above, or the calendar with your own location.
