About Gudi Padwa / Ugadi
Gudi Padwa, known as Ugadi in Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, is the first day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra and the start of the new Hindu year in the Vikram Samvat and Shaka calendars. It also begins the nine days of Chaitra Navratri.
In Maharashtra a gudi, a bright cloth tied to a staff and topped with a garland and a copper or silver pot, is raised outside the house. In Karnataka and Andhra, a mixed dish of six flavours (Ugadi pachadi) reflects the mix of experiences in the coming year.
How the date is decided
The new year begins on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, the first tithi after the new moon, taken at sunrise. The Vikram Samvat year number rises by one on this day, which is why the Samvat year and the calendar year differ by 57 after it and 56 before it.
How it is observed
- Clean the house, draw rangoli and hang mango leaves at the door.
- Raise the gudi or prepare Ugadi pachadi, depending on your region.
- Read the year’s panchang (Panchanga Shravana) and make resolutions for the new year.
Puja vidhi: how to do the puja
- Take an oil bath at dawn.
- Clean the house, draw rangoli and hang a toran of mango leaves on the door.
- Raise the Gudi: a bamboo staff dressed in bright silk with neem and mango leaves, a garland of sugar crystals (gathi) and an upturned copper or silver pot on top, on the right side of the main door or at a window.
- Worship the Gudi with haldi-kumkum and flowers.
- Eat neem leaves with jaggery, the bitter and the sweet of the year ahead; in the south, share Ugadi pachadi.
- Listen to the reading of the new year's panchang (panchang shravan).

Katha: Why the year begins today
Tradition holds that Brahma began the creation of the world on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, so it is the first day of the Hindu lunar year and of Vikram Samvat.
In Maharashtra the Gudi is also a flag of victory, remembering the triumph of King Shalivahana, from whom the Shaka era is counted, and, in some tellings, Rama's return to Ayodhya.

Frequently asked questions
When is Gudi Padwa / Ugadi in 2027?
Gudi Padwa / Ugadi 2027 falls on Wednesday, 7 April 2027 (New Delhi). The tithi runs from 5:21 AM to 4:29 AM, 8 Apr.
Why does the date of Gudi Padwa / Ugadi change every year?
Gudi Padwa / Ugadi follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar. It is tied to Shukla paksha Pratipada of the month of Chaitra, not to a fixed Gregorian date. A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year, so the date moves earlier by roughly that much each year, until a leap month (Adhik Maas) is added and it jumps back.
Is Gudi Padwa / Ugadi on the same day everywhere?
Not always. In Sydney the date differs from New Delhi, because tithis are read at local sunrise or sunset and these places are many hours away from India. Use the city table above, or the calendar with your own location.
