About Holi
Holi is the spring festival of colours. It is celebrated in two parts: Holika Dahan, a bonfire lit on the evening of Phalguna Purnima, and Rangwali Holi (Dhulandi) the next day, when people throw coloured powder and water and share sweets. The bonfire recalls the story of Prahlad and Holika and the victory of devotion over arrogance.
The festival also marks the arrival of spring and the end of the winter harvest season, and in many places the days before it are spent preparing the pyre.
How the date is decided
Holika Dahan is performed on Phalguna Purnima in the evening (Pradosh) when Purnima is running. The first half of Purnima carries Bhadra (Vishti karana), which is avoided for the fire: if Bhadra ends before midnight, the fire is lit after it ends, and if it lasts beyond midnight, the fire is still lit that night after Pradosh. Rangwali Holi is the following day.
How it is observed
- Light the Holika bonfire in the evening, after sunset and while Purnima is running.
- Next morning play with colours, visit family and share sweets such as gujiya.
- Many families offer fresh grain or coconut to the fire as a prayer for the new season.
Puja vidhi: how to do the puja
- In the days before, help gather wood and cow-dung cakes (upla) for the community Holika pyre.
- On the evening of Holika Dahan, at the muhurat after sunset, offer water, roli, akshat, flowers, raw cotton thread, turmeric, moong, batashe, a coconut and ears of new wheat or barley to the pyre.
- Wind the raw cotton thread around the pyre three or seven times while walking around it, and pray for the family.
- After the fire is lit, roast the new grain in it and share it as prasad.
- The next morning play Holi with colours (natural colours are kindest to skin and water), visit family and friends and share gujiya and sweets.

Katha: Prahlad and Holika
The demon king Hiranyakashipu had won a boon that made him almost impossible to kill, and he demanded to be worshipped as god. His own son Prahlad would worship only Vishnu, and nothing the king did could change him.
At last the king's sister Holika, who had a shawl that fire could not burn, sat in a blazing pyre with Prahlad on her lap. The shawl flew from her to cover Prahlad; Holika burned and the boy walked out unharmed. Soon after, Vishnu appeared as Narasimha and ended Hiranyakashipu. The Holika fire marks the victory of faith over arrogance.
Aarti: Om Jai Jagdish Hare
Read it in Roman letters
Written by Pandit Shardha Ram Phillauri in the 1870s and sung at the end of almost every Vishnu puja. Words vary slightly between families.

Frequently asked questions
When is Holi in 2027?
Holi 2027 falls on Monday, 22 March 2027 (New Delhi). The tithi runs from 6:22 PM to 4:14 PM, 22 Mar. Holika Dahan is the evening before, on Sunday, 21 March 2027.
Why does the date of Holi change every year?
Holi follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar. It is tied to Purnima (Shukla paksha) of the month of Phalguna, not to a fixed Gregorian date. A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year, so the date moves earlier by roughly that much each year, until a leap month (Adhik Maas) is added and it jumps back.
Is Holi on the same day everywhere?
Not always. In Sydney, Singapore the date differs from New Delhi, because tithis are read at local sunrise or sunset and these places are many hours away from India. Use the city table above, or the calendar with your own location.
