Puja vidhi: how to do the puja
- Bathe in the morning, in a river if possible, and make offerings for the ancestors: tarpan with water, black sesame and kusha grass, facing south.
- Feed Brahmins or people in need, and give food to cows, crows and dogs.
- In the evening, light a diya of mustard or sesame oil under a peepal tree and offer it water, especially on Shani or Somvati Amavasya.
- Many avoid starting new work or making big purchases on Amavasya.
- Chant "Om Pitribhyo Namah" in remembrance of the ancestors.
