Dates are for New Delhi. Masik Shivaratri is kept on the night when Chaturdashi is running at midnight (Nishita Kaal), so the tithi window shown is the Chaturdashi that covers that midnight. The date is the date on which that night begins.
Puja vidhi: how to do the puja
- Keep a fast through the day, with fruit or as you are able.
- At night, ideally in nishita kaal (around midnight), bathe the Shivling with water, milk and panchamrit.
- Offer bilva leaves, dhatura, white flowers, bhasma and chandan.
- Chant "Om Namah Shivaya" and sing the aarti.
- Many begin the monthly vrat on Maha Shivratri and keep it for a year. Break the fast the next morning.
