Pradosh Vrat is observed on the thirteenth tithi (Trayodashi) of each fortnight, twice a month, in honour of Shiva. The fast is kept through the day and Shiva is worshipped in the evening twilight (Pradosh Kaal), the period after sunset. When Pradosh falls on a Monday it is called Soma Pradosh, on a Tuesday Bhauma Pradosh, and on a Saturday Shani Pradosh.

Dates are for New Delhi. Pradosh Vrat is kept on the day when Trayodashi is running in the evening twilight after sunset, so the tithi window shown is the Trayodashi that covers that evening, not the tithi at sunrise.
Puja vidhi: how to do the puja
- Keep a fast through the day, with fruit.
- Bathe again before sunset.
- In Pradosh Kaal, the time around sunset shown on the page, worship Shiva and Parvati: abhishek with water, milk or panchamrit, then bilva leaves, dhatura and white flowers.
- Read the Pradosh katha for the weekday (Soma, Bhauma or Shani Pradosh have their own).
- Chant "Om Namah Shivaya" 108 times, sing the aarti and break the fast after the puja.

Katha: Why Shiva is worshipped at dusk
When the gods and demons churned the ocean of milk, the deadly poison halahala rose first and began to burn the worlds. Shiva drank it and held it in his throat, which turned blue, and he became Neelkanth.
It was the dusk of Trayodashi. The relieved gods praised him, and Shiva danced in joy between the day and the night. That is why he is worshipped in Pradosh Kaal on every Trayodashi.
Aarti: Om Jai Shiv Omkara
Read it in Roman letters
The most widely sung Shiva aarti, attributed to Swami Shivanand. Words vary slightly between families.
Frequently asked questions
When is the next Pradosh Vrat?
The next Pradosh Vrat is on Thursday, 8 October 2026 (Pradosh Vrat (Krishna), New Delhi).
Can the date differ between cities?
Yes. Tithis are read at a local time (sunrise, or the evening for Pradosh), so a city far from India can see the same observance a day earlier or later. Use the calendar with your own city for exact dates.
