Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of each fortnight, so it comes twice a month, once in the bright (Shukla) and once in the dark (Krishna) paksha. Many Hindus, especially Vaishnavas, fast on Ekadashi and worship Vishnu. Each of the 24 Ekadashis of the year has its own name and story.

Dates are for New Delhi and use the tithi running at local sunrise. A tithi can start and end at any hour, so the table also gives its start and end time. When Ekadashi is running at sunrise on two consecutive days, both are shown; the second is the day many Vaishnava traditions keep the fast.
Puja vidhi: how to do the puja
- On Dashami, the day before, eat one simple sattvik meal before sunset.
- On Ekadashi, bathe and worship Vishnu with tulsi leaves (picked the day before, because tulsi is not plucked on Ekadashi), yellow flowers, panchamrit and fruit.
- Fast as you are able: nirjala, with fruit and milk, or simply avoiding grains and beans, especially rice.
- Read that Ekadashi's katha, chant "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" or the Vishnu Sahasranama, and keep awake at night if you can.
- Break the fast (parana) on Dwadashi after sunrise, avoiding the first quarter of Dwadashi (Hari Vasara), and give food in charity.

Katha: How Ekadashi was born
The demon Mura terrorised the gods, and Vishnu fought him for a long time before withdrawing to rest in a cave at Badrikashram. As Mura crept in to attack the sleeping god, a radiant maiden emerged from Vishnu's body and slew him.
It was the eleventh tithi. Pleased, Vishnu named her Ekadashi and blessed her: whoever fasts on her day would be freed from sin. Her birth is kept as Utpanna Ekadashi, and every Ekadashi of the year has its own story besides.
Aarti: Om Jai Jagdish Hare
Read it in Roman letters
Written by Pandit Shardha Ram Phillauri in the 1870s and sung at the end of almost every Vishnu puja. Words vary slightly between families.
Frequently asked questions
When is the next Ekadashi?
The next Ekadashi is on Tuesday, 6 October 2026 (Indira Ekadashi, New Delhi).
Can the date differ between cities?
Yes. Tithis are read at a local time (sunrise, or the evening for Pradosh), so a city far from India can see the same observance a day earlier or later. Use the calendar with your own city for exact dates.
