Purnima is the full-moon day, the fifteenth tithi of the bright fortnight. Many observe a fast, bathe in a sacred river and worship Vishnu or Satyanarayan, and several of the year’s major festivals fall on a Purnima, such as Guru Purnima, Raksha Bandhan and Holika Dahan.
Purnima dates from 4 Oct 2026 to 2027

Dates are for New Delhi and use the tithi running at local sunrise. A tithi can start and end at any hour, so the table also gives its start and end time. When Purnima is running at sunrise on two consecutive days, both are shown; follow the day your tradition prefers.
Puja vidhi: how to do the puja
- Bathe early; a bath in a holy river and charity (daan) on Purnima are especially meritorious.
- Perform the Satyanarayan puja: set up a chowki and kalash with a picture of Satyanarayan, and offer panchamrit, tulsi, fruit and panjiri or sooji sheera as prasad.
- Read the Satyanarayan katha (five short chapters) with the family.
- In the evening, offer arghya to the Moon with water, milk, rice and white flowers.
- Many keep a fast until moonrise.

Katha: The Satyanarayan katha, in short
Narada asked Vishnu how people in the Kali Yuga could be free of suffering, and Vishnu told him of the Satyanarayan vrat, the worship of God as Truth. A poor Brahmin of Kashi kept it and prospered; a woodcutter heard of it and his life changed too.
A merchant promised to keep the vrat if he had a child, then put it off again and again, and lost everything until he remembered his promise and kept it. The katha's lesson is simple: keep the promises you make to God, and never refuse prasad.
Aarti: Om Jai Jagdish Hare
Read it in Roman letters
Written by Pandit Shardha Ram Phillauri in the 1870s and sung at the end of almost every Vishnu puja. Words vary slightly between families.
